Rep. Todd Hunter reveals proposed legislation to change Department of Insurance

13084695334_bcfe24606b_bAUSTIN — Reacting to the possibility the state could add surcharges to property and automobile insurance policies after a catastrophic storm, state Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, unveiled proposed legislation Thursday to make the Texas Department of Insurance more transparent.

The windstorm association has been considering how to implement premium surcharges in the event of a severely destructive weather event.

The go-ahead that TDI gave for the new rules allowing for the surcharges fueled Hunter’s proposed legislation.

“There has been a lot of frustration on the coastline that the Texas Department of Insurance doesn’t really care,” Hunter said. “We feel that there is a lot of taxation and no representation.”
